Tahmeed Coach LTD has issued a statement on the fatal accident involving their bus and an oil tanker along the Busia-Kisumu highway.
In an update, the bus company reiterated its commitment to ensuring that they adhere to all road safety regulations and pledged to cooperate with authorities as they conduct investigations.
The company also wished families affected a quick recovery and assured future passengers that measures have been put in place to ensure they get to their destination in good time.
“Earlier today afternoon 1st March 1, 2024, our bus KCV 296R from Busia to Mombasa via Mumias was involved in an accident at 1320 hours close to Mundika Primary, onboard were 6 passengers and a crew member all of whom were successfully evacuated and taken to the nearest hospital for treatment,” the company stated.
“As Tahmeed we are committed to ensuring we adhere to all road safety regulations as such we are cooperating with the authorities as they conduct their investigations to try and unravel the cause of the accident, we wish all families affected quick recovery. For passengers who were to be picked in the next towns measures have been put in place to ensure you get to your destination in good time,” the company added.
In the same breath, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) authority and the Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on Friday issued a statement on the fatal accident.
In a joint statement, the two regulators stated that preliminary reports revealed that the incident occurred due to lane indiscipline and dangerous overtaking by the oil tank driver, they also announced that the case was being investigated by a multi-agency team.
“Ten (10) persons were involved in the crash and unfortunately two succumbed to their injuries. Eight passengers are currently receiving treatment at the Busia County Referral Hospital.
“Although the prime mover of the tanker suffered extensive damage, the trailer and the bulk tank remained intact with no leakage of the bulk diesel being transported. The crash scene has been secured,” the authorities said.
The two boards condoled with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a quick recovery.
